Don’t DIY: The Dangers of At-Home Denture Relining

When it comes to saving money, there are some great hacks out there to cut your costs. For example, you can mow your own lawn instead of hiring a service or make your own coffee instead of running to the café every morning. But one way you should never attempt to save a buck is by relining your own dentures. While it may seem tempting or “easy enough,” many an average joe has ruined an otherwise fixable pair of dentures by attempting to reline them at home. Here’s why when it comes to denture repair some things should be left to the pros!

What is Denture Relining?

With time, the fit of your dentures could begin to change. Because they are not as effective if they don’t fit properly, adjusting them to accommodate your mouth is essential. When a denture is relined, new materials are added to its inside surface to help improve the fit and make the dentures comfortable again.

How Are Dentures Relined?

To reline a denture, your dentist sends it to a dental lab to fill in any gaps in the areas where the gums have changed. This can typically be done on the same-day or within a day or two depending on when you drop your dentures off for repair.

Some dental offices also provide chairside relines that can be done while the patient waits, however lab relines typically are more durable and last longer.

Can I Reline My Own Dentures?

While yes, it is possible to reline your own dentures at home, it is highly recommended that you do not. Despite the myriad how-to videos out there, relining dentures is not as easy as it looks. In fact, it’s easier to permanently damage them than it is to successfully repair them. Here are a few ways you can ruin your dentures by attempting to fix them yourself.

  • The material used to reline them can become stuck to the denture, causing sharp edges that injure your gums.
  • If the denture is not completely sealed and the bite has changed, it can be difficult to chew following the repair.
  • The materials used in at-home reline kits are inferior to the materials used at the lab and will not last as long, requiring you to replace your dentures sooner.
  • You can put too much or not enough material in the denture, and once the material sets, this is impossible to correct.

If the fit of your dentures has changed, you may be able to extend their life with the help of a reline, but don’t try this at home! Schedule a visit to your dentist for a denture evaluation. They can determine whether your denture is fixable, and make sure any repairs are done correctly the first time.
